Minoru Yamasaki, US architect

Minoru Yamasaki (1912-1986), US architect, with a model of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Yamasaki, born in Seattle, USA, to Japanese parents, became one of the leading architects of the second half of the 20th century. A practitioner of the style called 'New Formalism', his designs include the Pacific Science Center, Seattle, the Torre Picasso, Madrid, Spain, and the Twin Towers, New York, USA. The design of the latter began in 1965, and construction took place from 1966 to 1972. The tallest buildings in the world (417 metres) from 1972 to 1974, they were destroyed in the terrorist attack of 11 September 2001.
