The Old Man of the Mountain

The former state symbol of New Hampshire, "The Old Man of the Mountain", was a rock formation on a shoulder of Profile Mountain, twelve hundred feet above Profile Lake in the Franconia Notch. It was composed of five layers of Conway red granite; one formed the chin, another the upper lip, a third the nose and two layers comprised the forehead. The brutal winters of 2002 and 2003 contributed to the demise of "The Old Man of the Mountain".
