His works span the fields of poetry, drama, prose, philosophy, and science, although he is best known for his play "Faust". Faust the character stands on the left (from the viewer's perspective) behind Goethe, while Mephistopheles stands to the right. Goethe also authored the scientific text Theory of Colors.
