With the discovery of fire, the earliest form of artificial lighting used to illuminate an area were campfires or torches. 1) Folded palm leaf used as torch, East Indies. 2) Stormy petrel, Orkney Islands. 3) Candle fish in split stick, Alaska. 4) Birch bark torch, Iroquois Indians. 5) Splint fat pine knots torch, Virginia. 6) Fat pine torch, Southern Indians. 7) Dakar gum wrapped in palm leaves torch, Malaysia. 8) Rope in resin torch, Europe Middle Ages. 9) Torch made of cords soaked in fat or wax, Europe 16th century. 10 and 11) Cord soaked in fat or wax and coiled, England. 12) Rush soaked in grease, forming a primitive candle, England. 13) Stick smeared with grease, Mongolia. 14) Mass of fat formed on stick with wick of fiber wound around, Kashmir, India. 15) Tallow dip with rush wick, later cotton, Northern Europe. 16) Candles formed of wax with wick of fiber, Japan and North Africa. 17) Molded candles. Patent candles of stearine, paraffin, wax and decorated candles, 19th Century. Color enhanced.
