FINLAND-KVARKEN ARCHIPELAGO-UNESCO-WORLD HERITAGE

(130910) -- BRUSSELS, Sept 10, 2013 () -- Photo taken on Sept 4, 2013 shows the view of Kvarken Archipelago at Svedjehamn, about 40 kilometers north of Vaasa, Finland. The 5,600 islands of Kvarken Archipelago, which is the only admitted UNESCO World Natural Heritage of Finnish, feature unusual ridged washboard moraines, °ÆDe Geer moraines°Ø, formed by the melting of the continental ice sheet, 10,000 to 24,000 years ago. The Archipelago is continuously rising from the sea in a process of rapid glacio-isostatic uplift, whereby the land, previously weighed down under the weight of a glacier, lifts at rates that are among the highest in the world.
