Title: Girl Jumping Rope, 1936
Caption: Entitled: "Girl jumping rope." Skipping rope or jumping rope s the primary tool used in the game of skipping played by children and many young adults, where one or more participants jump over a rope swung so that it passes under their feet and over their heads. This may consist of one participant turning and jumping the rope, or a minimum of three participants taking turns, two of whom turn the rope while the third participant attempts to jump into the turning rope. The game begins when the skipper jumps in and ends when the skipper messes up. The first concrete evidence of jump rope activity can be seen in medieval paintings where children roll hoops and jump rope down the cobblestone streets of Europe. Photographed for the Farm Security Administration by H. Armstrong Roberts, May 1936.
