'The Battle of Jemappes', 1792, (1821). The Austrian army was in winter quarters near Jemappes, in the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium) when attacked by the French on 6 November. Outnumbered by more than three to one, the 13,000 Austrians were beaten by General Dumouriez's 45,000 Frenchmen. A boost for the fledgling republic, the revolutionary forces went on to capture Brussels. Part of the collection at The National Gallery, London.
