Death of Sebastien Rale, French Jesuit missionary in America, 1724 (c1880). Artist: Unknown

Death of Sebastien Rale, French Jesuit missionary in America, 1724 (c1880). Rale (1657-1724) was a French Jesuit missionary who worked among the Abenaki Indians in north-eastern North America. He became involved in the conflict over disputed territory between the French and English and their respective Native American allies. The Abenaki raided English settlements, apparently with Rale's encouragement, and he was killed in a retaliatory raid by the English. A print from Cassell's History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume I, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880.
