Lemberg Ghetto, USSR, World War II, 1941-1944. Lemberg, formerly part of Poland, was captured by the Soviet Union in 1939. A ghetto was created in 1941 by Nazi Germany which held the city during much of World War II. The Jewish population of the city was almost completely exterminated, with thousands sent to Belzec concentration camp. Re-named L'viv, the city, also known as Lwow or Lvov, is now in the Ukraine.
