The French equivalent of the Bogeyman is le Croque-Mitaine ("the mitten-biter" or rather "the hand-cruncher". A Bogeyman is a common allusion to a mythical creature in many cultures used by adults to frighten children into good behaviour. Roland ((died 778); was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became one of the principal figures in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France.
