Ocellate River Stingray (Potamotrygon motoro)

An Ocellate River Stingray (Potamotrygon motoro). The spectacular animals are freshwater stingrays - fully equip with a barb on their tails to defend themselves. This species can be variable in color and in pattern. It is abundant in some systems, particularly where sandy or muddy bottoms are involved. They eat small aquatic invertebrates and fishes - particularly fond of freshwater shrimp and crabs. This is a baby fish - just 15-17cm (6 or 7 inches) in diameter. There are reports of individuals with disc diameters of 100cm (over 39) - it can be a big ray. Like the other freshwater rays of the Amazon, this species is ovoviviparous - eggs are produced but retained inside the female. The eggs hatch in the female and she gives birth to live young. This specimen photographed in 2019.
