Manchester Ship Canal and Barton Aqueduct, Eccles, Greater Manchester, 1945. The Barton Aqueduct opened to allow a vessel to pass on the Manchester Ship Canal. Designed by Sir Edward Leader Williams, the Barton Aqueduct is a swing bridge that carries the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal. It became operational in 1893.
