Detail from The Honors Tapestry,16th Century

Detail from The Honors shows Perseus, Medusa, Pegasus, Neptune, Hector, Marcia and Helenus, and the authors Buccaccio, Pronapides, Homer and Ovid. The series of tapestries known as The Honors was woven by Pieter van Aelst, an upholsterer of the Brussels court. The manufacture of the cloth series celebrates the election of Charles of Habsburg for the dignity of emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, in 1519, and his coronation in Aachen, on October 23, 1520. The cloths illustrate the young sovereign about the virtues he must cultivate and the vices he must fail to obtain the highest rewards.
