Slave Compound, Gulf of Guinea,1746

Slave factories, or compounds, maintained by traders from four European nations on the Gulf of Guinea in what is now Nigeria. The Slave Coast is a historical name formerly used for parts of coastal West Africa along the Bight of Benin. The name is derived from the region's history as a major source of African slaves during the Atlantic slave trade from the early 16th century to the late 19th century. Engraving by Nathaniel Parr, 1746.
