Virgil and Dante Riding Geryon, Divine Comedy

Virgil and Dante sitting on the back of Geryon, being transported from the 8th to the 7th circle of Hell in Dante's Divine Comedy. Illustration from 1825 by Bartolomeo Pinelli. Dante Alighieri (1265 - 1321) was an Italian poet and moral philosopher best known for the epic poem The Divine Comedy. On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, but at a deeper level, it represents, allegorically, the Christian soul's journey towards God.
