Caption: Shoulder Guard (O-Sode), mid–late 14th century, Japanese, Iron, leather, lacquer, silk, gilt copper, H. 17 1/4 in. (43.8 cm); W. 13 3/4 in. (34.9 cm), Armor Parts, Large square sode are the earliest form of shoulder guards used in Japan. This rare, unrestored example is almost contemporary with the Ashikaga armor in the center of this gallery.
