Catalan World Atlas 1375. Voyage of Niccolo and Marco Polo. The Venetian jewel merchants Niccolo (his son) Marco Polo with Mongol envoys on their way to visit the Great Khan. Detail from a Catalan Atlas of 1375 which was painted on eight wooden panels; the largest of the catalan world maps, it was the first to show India as a peninsular. Although Marco Polo's account of his Eastern travels was not printed for 200 years, details of manuscript copies found their onto maps such as this. The group with camels represents the trip of the Polo's crossing the Tien Shan in Siankiang Province China with a Mongol caravan bound from the Volga to the court of Kublai Khan at Peking.
