Brewer's yeast. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of cells of brewer's or baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). This fungus consists of single vegetative cells. Small daughter cells can be seen budding off from some of the larger mother cells. Once it has reached its full size, the daughter cell will be indistinguishable from its mother cell. S. cerevisiae ferments sugar, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide in the process. It is used in the production of beer, wine and bread. Magnification: x1500 at 6x9cm size.
