Title: Marduk, Babylonian God
Caption: This Babylonian monster with its horned lion's head and scaly body is one manifestation of Marduk who, in the Babylonian creation epic, saved the gods from destruction and was annually reinstated as their king in some form of rebirth cycle. Marduk was the Babylonian name of a god from ancient Mesopotamia and patron deity of the city of Babylon, who, when Babylon became the political center of the Euphrates valley in the time of Hammurabi rose to the position of the head of the Babylonian pantheon.
