MARTIN WALSER was born on March 24, 1927 in Wasserburg am Bodensee. Walser is one of the most successful German-speaking writers. After studying literature, history and philosophy, he received his doctorate in 1951. His first novel, 'Marriages in Philippsburg', was published in 1957. In his novels, Walser describes the everyday conflicts in interpersonal relationships and the grievances in the German performance-oriented society. In addition to his prose, Walser also writes dramas and radio plays. In 1981 he received the Georg Büchner Prize and in 1998 the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
