Reverend Edward Noel Mellish VC, c1916, (c1920). Portrait of the 'Fighting Parson' - British army chaplain Noel Mellish (1880-1962), was 'awarded the Victoria Cross for rescuing Wounded Men under Fire' at St Eloi in Flanders during the First World War. 'Under continuous and heavy shell and machine-gun fire he brought in ten badly wounded men on the first day, seeming to bear a charmed life. On the second day the battalion to which he was attached was relieved, but he went back and brought in twelve more wounded men'.
