Layers of the Skin

An illustrated section of tissue, depicting the layers and structures in human skin. The skin is divided into two major layers called the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis provides the protective outer surface of the skin, and consists of stratified squamous epithelium. The dermis lies beneath the epidermis, and consists of connective tissue which contains nerve endings, hair follicles, sweat glands and blood vessels.
