Frederick William, 1620 - 1688, Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia, thus ruler of Brandenburg-Prussia, from 1640 until his death in 1688. Frederick William receives Hugenots who fled France 8th November 1685. (The Edict of Potsdam: Proclamation issued by Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia, in Potsdam on 29th October 1685, as a response to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by the Edict of Fontainebleau. It encouraged Protestants to relocate to Brandenburg). Wood engraving after painting, 1885, by Hugo Vogel (1855-1934), coloured later.
