Arthur Wellesley,1st Duke of Wellington

Arthur Wellesley (May 1, 1769 - September 14, 1852) was an Anglo-Irish soldier and statesman. Wellesley participated in over 60 battles during his military career and is regarded as one of the greatest defensive commanders of all time. After the end of his active military career, Wellington returned to politics. He was twice British prime minister as part of the Tory party and continued as one of the leading figures in the House of Lords until his retirement. Painted by Thomas Phillips; engraved by W.
