'Portrait of Monsieur and Madame Auguste Manet', 1860 (1938). Auguste Manet (1797-1862) held important posts in the legal administration, becoming a chevalier of the Legion of Honour and a judge. He married Eugenie Desiree Fournier who gave him three sons, Edouard (1832-83), Eugene (1833-92) and Gustave (1835-84). Auguste Manet became partially paralysed in 1858, two years before Manet painted this portrait. Found in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, France. Plate taken from Manet, by Robert Rey, published by William Heinemann Ltd (1938).
