Otho, 7th Emperor of Rome

Otho (April 28, 32 - April 16, 69) was Roman Emperor for three months, from January 15 - April 16, 69. He was the second emperor of the Year of the Four Emperors. Otho introduced his beautiful wife, Poppaea Sabina, to Nero. She quickly became his mistress, divorced Otho and had the Emperor send him away. In 68 AD the future Emperor Galba, rose in revolt against Nero and Otho accompanied him to Rome. Otho entered into communication with the discontented Praetorians, and he was hailed by them as their emperor on January 15, 69. He read through Galba's private correspondence and realized the extent of the revolution in Germany, where several legions had declared for Vitellius, and were already advancing upon Italy. At the Battle of Bedriacum about 40,000 men were killed in the fighting. Othonian troops fled back to their camp. The next day they surrendered and took the oath of allegiance to Vitellius. Otho decided to commit suicide rather than cause more deaths, and stabbed himself in the heart. One of a set of 12 engravings of Roman emperors on horseback, 17th century.
