Caption: Phineas Taylor (P. T.) Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891) was an American showman and businessman. In 1841, he opened Barnum's American Museum with a changing series of live acts and curiosities, including albinos, giants, midgets, jugglers, magicians, exotic women, detailed models of cities and famous battles, and, eventually, a menagerie of animals. In 1870, he established P. T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome. In 1881 he merged with James Bailey and the name was shortened to Barnum & Bailey Circus, which toured the world. Cigarette card for American Tobacco Company, 1911 (cropped and cleaned).
