Samuel Gorton's landing in America, c1636 (c1880). Artist: Whymper

Samuel Gorton's landing in America, c1636 (c1880). Fearing persecution for his religious beliefs, Gorton (1592-1677) fled England for the American colonies in 1636. He founded a religious sect knows as the Gortonites, and continually came into conflict with the established Puritan church in the New World. As a result he was banished from Massachusetts and joined Roger Williams' colony of Providence, Rhode Island. A print from Cassell's History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume I, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880.
