Title: Prairie Dog Colony
Caption: Sectioned view of the tunnel system of the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus), showing the various chambers of organization including areas for nesting, food storage, latrine, and turn-around. Elevated mounds prevent flooding, increase airflow through the burrow, and act as observation points. The tunnel system provides shelter from predators and is widened near the opening to allow turn around and listening for predators before venturing outside.
