Van Schooten was a professor of mathematics in Leiden. On the front, a scholar sits at his table in his study. His hand rests on a globe. Next to the globe a secretaire with inkwell and feather. In the background you can see a filled bookcase and on the right a second globe on the ground with a draped curtain above. The circular reads: ACCIDIT IN PUNCTO QUOD NON SPERATUR IN ANNO. On the reverse is the family crest with a lion in a barrel above and a helmet below. The shield consists of four parts with a Dutch lion at the top left and bottom right and a cross at the bottom left and top right. The shield is surrounded by lush acanthus leaves. The circular reads: PETRUS A SCHOOTEN PROFESSOR MATHESEOS LEYDAE. with the inscription at the bottom of the cartouche: OBYT 30 NOV 1679, 1888
