'Robert Banks Jenkinson, Earl of Liverpool', c1820, (mid 19th century). Portrait of British politician and Prime Minister Robert Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool. Lord Liverpool (1770-1828) served as Prime Minister from 1812-1827, the longest term of office since the establishment of the United Kingdom. He argued for the abolition of the slave trade, but was generally opposed to reform. After the Peterloo Massacre in 1819, his government imposed the Six Acts legislation which limited free speech and the right to gather for peaceful demonstration. He was also opposed to granting political equality to Roman Catholics. 'From the original by Sir Thos. Lawrence, P.R.A. in the collection of The Rt. Honourable The Earl of Liverpool'. [The London Printing and Publishing Company, London].
