WWII - Eastern Front 1943

The Nazi Propaganda! on the back of the image reads: "Military base in the gang territory. In order to successfully defend themselves from gang attacks, enlisted German safety personnel built a fort from the abounding wood." Image from the Eastern Front/Russia, 20 December 1943. Since the summer of 1942, the German were not allowed to use the term "partisans" anymore for psychological reasons. Instead, terms like "gangs", "bandits", and "gang combat" were employed. The attack on the Soviet Union by the German Reich was agreed on in July 1940 and prepared as the "Operation Barbarossa" since December 1940.
