Fifth Cross the Volturno: A fifth Army Bofors gun in the grounds of King Victor Emanuel's palace at Caserta (on the railway just south of the River Volturno). During the hours of darkness of Oct. 14/15 1943, the Fifth Army launched its big attack on the Volturno River. Soon several bridgeheads were in Allied hands and armour began to make the river crossing. Now (19.10.43) Allied forces are well over the river at several points and have occupied the town of Cancello, about 6 miles from the coast.
