UNKNOWN. In 1767, James Hargreaves invented the first spinning jenny, with which the spinseter could spin ten separate threads at once.  He was however driven from Blackburn, his native town, by his neighbours, who smashed up his machine believing it would drive them out of employment.  In 1769 Sir Richard Arkwright, patented his cotton spinning frame and established factories at Cromford.  H was the first to employ machinery on a large scale for textile manufacturers.
