FRANÇOIS DE MEERSMAN. 'The Divorce of Josephine', 1846, (mid 19th century). Creator: François de Meersman.

FRANçOIS DE MEERSMAN. 'The Divorce of Josephine', 1846, (mid 19th century). The French Emperor Napoleon divorced his wife Josephine in 1810 as she had not produced a male heir. Although she had been the love of his life, at the age of 46 it seemed unlikely that she would enable the continuation of the Bonaparte line. Engraving after 'The Divorce of the Empress Josephine', painting made in 1846 by Frédéric Schopin, in the Wallace Collection, London. [J. S. Virtue & Co. Ltd, London, ].
