Historical satirical of the equipment and tools used by a surgeon. The items shown here are labeled in French and include a cranial elevator (on his head), uterine and dental mirrors (in his hands), an early blood vessel clamp (bec de corbin) and forceps (on shoulders) and a ligature and rupture bandages (wrists). This is one of a set of artworks by the French artist Nicolas de l'Armessin II, titled 'Costumes Grotesques', dating from around 1695.
