Title: Murasaki Shikibu, "The Tale of Genji"
Caption: Chapter 45. Lady at the Bridge. The actor Segawa Kikunojo in the role of Hashihime. The Tale of Genji is a classic work of Japanese literature written by Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century. The work is a unique depiction of the lifestyles of high courtiers during the Heian period, written in archaic language and a poetic style that make it unreadable to the average Japanese without dedicated study. The Tale of Genji is often referred to as "the first novel", though there is considerable debate over this. Toyokuni Utagawa, 1820s (cropped and cleaned).
