Building, locality, street, historical event, situation, smoke, advertising pillar, poster pillar, Hamburg, The St. Michaelis Memorial Folder is the last of more than ten portfolios of photographs from Hamburg that Georg Koppmann dedicated to his home town. The portfolio was published in 1906 on the occasion of the fire in the main church of St. Michaelis. Although the collapsing tower and the burnt-out ruins are the focus of the portfolio, Koppmann supplements it with reproductions of historical engravings, pictures of the intact building and photographs showing St. Michaelis as a Hamburg landmark. At the end of a career spanning more than 40 years, Koppmann not only benefits from his experience as an event photographer, but can also draw on the strengths of his extensive archive of city views.
