JAMES GILLRAY. The Bow to the Throne, - alias -, the Begging Bowl. 1788. Gillray transforms Sayers' original caricature, which derided Hastings' accusers (see P3313), into a diametrically opposite interpretation of events. Hastings, in oriental dress, sits on a commode decorated with an upturned crown, distributing bags of money to Edward Thurlow, the Lord Chancellor, and William Pitt, the Prime Minister. Queen Charlotte, clutching a sack of money, kisses Hastings' foot, while George III crouches in the corner with his hand in the commode, collecting the remaining coins. Published : 1788 . Source: P3310.
