James Van Allen, American Space Scientist

Space scientist Dr. James Alfred Van Allen (1914-2006), surrounded by associates at the State University of Iowa. Dr. Van Allen is credited with confirming the existence of radiation belts. The most important discovery of the 1957-58 International Geophysical Year was acknowledged to be the discovery of zones of trapped radiation--protons and electrons---surrounding Earth. Van Allen and his group interpreted data from Geiger counters placed on board the first Explorer satellites.
