Manvers Main colliery, Wath upon Dearne, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, October 1965. The Area Face Control Room was situated at the Manvers Main colliery but monitored the performance of all the pits in the area. All the pits that were monitored were listed alphabetically around the room, which was manned 24 hours a day, in case any problems which might arise. The performance of each pit was checked and if problems were detected the men in the room were responsible for calling out the necessary staff to rectify the situation.
