Mahmud II, Ottoman Emperor, 1808. Mahmud (1785-1839) became Sultan in 1808 after the overthrow of Mustafa IV. His reign saw a resumption of the programme of westernising reform begun by his cousin Selim III but interrupted when a conservative coup led to him being replaced by Mustafa.
