John Denton Pinkstone French, Earl of Ypres (1852-1925) British Army officer born in Ripple Vale, Kent, England. Created Field Marshal in 1913. Commanded the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) at the beginning of the First World War. Because of poor judgement, he was replaced in December 1915 by Douglas Haig.
