The New "Devil's Bridge" On The St. Gotthard Pass In The Alps -- A new road bridge over the Schollenen Gorge on the St. Gotthard Pass is at present under construction. In recent years it has become clear that the existing bridge, built in 1828, could no longer stand the strain of the ever-increasing flow of traffic into Switzerland. The Swiss engineers expect the new bridge, which was started in the spring, to be completed before the coming winter. This photograph shows the granite and concrete blocks being laid in their prescribed places. A special type of mortar is being used to weld them together. December 07, 1955. (Photo by Camera Press).
