Pierre-Charles-Alexandre Louis (1787-1872), French physician, clinician and pathologist known for his studies on tuberculosis, typhoid fever, and pneumonia. He developed the "numerical method," a forerunner to epidemiology and the modern clinical trial. Lithograph by Nicolas Eustache Maurin (1799-1850).
