VEGF Receptor 2, illustration

An illustration of a vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), subtype 2. Vascular endothelial growth factor is a signalling protein involved in the formation of the circulatory system and growth of blood vessels. VEGF proteins stimulate cellular responses by interacting with specialized tyrosine kinase receptors known as VEGFR on the cell surface. Both VEGF and VEGFR also play a role in pathological angiogenesis, specifically tumour angiogenesis, whereby newly formed blood vessels can supply nutrients and transport for cancerous cells in the body.
