John Rennie the Elder, Scottish Civil Engineer

John Rennie (June 7, 1761 - October 4, 1821) was a Scottish civil engineer who designed many bridges, canals, and docks. In 1791, he moved to London and set up his own engineering business, having by then begun to expand into civil engineering, particularly the construction of canals. Over the years he also attained a deserved reputation as a builder of bridges, combining stone with new cast-iron techniques to create ow, wide, elliptical arches. He was a skillful architect, endowed with a keen sense of beauty of design. He was also responsible for designing and building docks at Hull, Liverpool, Greenock, London (London, East India and West India docks), and Leith and improving the harbors and dockyards at Chatham, Devonport, Portsmouth, Holyhead, Ramsgate and Sheerness. The distinguishing characteristics of his work were firmness and solidity, and it has stood the test of time. He died in 1821 at the age of 60.
