Aepycamelus, Miocene Mammal

Aepycamelus is an extinct genus of camelid, formerly called Alticamelus, which lived during the Miocene epoch existing for approximately 15 million years. There are two odd things about Aepycamelus: first, this megafauna camel looked more like a giraffe, with its long legs and slender neck, and second, it lived in Miocene North America (not a place one normally associates with camels, whatever the era!) Befitting its giraffe-like appearance, Aepycamelus spent most of its time nibbling the leaves off high trees. Aepycamelus walked on its toes only. Unlike earlier species of camelid, they possessed cushioned pads like those of modern camels. Illustration originally captioned: A Miocene giraffe camel, after Scott by Robert Bruce Horsfall. American Museum of Natural History. No date.
