Biblical scene, from Matthew 25: 8, The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins: 'And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out'.' The five virgins who are prepared for the bridegroom's arrival are rewarded, while the five who are not prepared are disowned. Engraving after a painting of the 17th century.
