Spain, Madinat al-Zahra, House of Yafar, portico and basilican hall

When Abd al-Rahman proclaimed himself Caliph in 929, he founded the palatial city of Madinat al-Zahra as his personal residence and capital of the new Caliphate state. The House of Yafar, seen here, belonged to the Prime Minister of the Caliph al-Hakam, who was appointed by him in 961. The house includes a public area for official receptions, notable for a three-aisled, basilican hall with a projecting portico, through which one entered a large courtyard.
